For years, the Amex Platinum Travel Card rewarded a simple ritual. Put ₹4 lakh of annual spend on the card, collect the milestone points, use the Taj voucher, and repeat.

That bargain is changing. From 10 September 2026, the ₹1.9 lakh milestone loses 7,500 Membership Rewards points. The ₹4 lakh milestone keeps its 10,000-point bonus, but anyone who stretched to ₹7 lakh will receive only 10,000 milestone points in total, alongside a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences voucher. The richer 40,000-point milestone journey disappears.

For some cardmembers, that will be enough reason to leave. Yet the final decision is not the cancellation itself. It is what happens to the Membership Rewards balance before the card is closed.

Close the card with points still sitting in the account, and that balance can be forfeited 30 days later. Years of accumulated value can vanish simply because the exit was rushed.

First, understand what is at stake

The devaluation does not change the regular earn rate. It changes the milestone layer that made Platinum Travel unusually rewarding at specific annual-spend levels.

Before you cancel: protect the balance

A clean exit takes longer than a phone call. A new loyalty account may need up to 14 days to link, so start while Platinum Travel is still active.

ActionWhy it mattersWhen to do it
Clear dues, refunds and pending EMIsCancellation should begin with a zero card balanceBefore requesting closure
Screenshot the MR balance and recent activityCreates a record of points earned, reversed or pendingBefore any transfer
Link the destination loyalty accountVerification is not always instantAt least two weeks before closure
Search for the award before transferringMost transfers are effectively one-wayImmediately before the transfer
Wait until points arriveA transfer confirmation is not the same as a usable balanceBefore cancelling
Check the Platinum Reserve linkageThe new Reserve joins the existing MR account and keeps the balance in the same poolWait until the card and full balance are visible before closing Platinum Travel

Keep the destination loyalty account in your own name and make sure the membership details match before moving a single point.

You might need to do these 3 important things before closing your Amex Platinum Travel Card

The annual fee may be approaching, but that does not mean the card should be closed in a hurry. Before transferring a large balance or leaving American Express completely, pause long enough to check whether one of these three routes leaves you better off.

1. Recently renewed? Ask Amex about a pro-rata fee refund

If Platinum Travel was renewed recently, call the number on the back of the card and explain how the September 2026 devaluation changes the value of the year you have already paid for.

Explain when the renewal fee was charged, which benefits influenced your decision to renew, and how the revised milestone structure changes the card’s value for the remainder of the membership year. Ask whether Amex can offer a pro-rata refund of the renewal fee if you close or change the card.

A refund is not guaranteed. Even so, that conversation is worth having before accepting the full cost of another year.

2. Not ready to transfer? Platinum Reserve can buy you time

If the Platinum Travel annual fee is due, yet you have neither a vacation planned nor a clear preference among Marriott, Avios, KrisFlyer or another partner, you do not need to make a speculative transfer simply to escape the renewal fee.

One option worth considering is the American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card.

The current limited-period Platinum Reserve referral offer adds up to 19,000 Membership Rewards points for eligible applicants who complete the qualifying spends. Treat the points as an offset, not as a reason to apply on their own. Check the live offer, timelines and exclusions before proceeding.

The more important benefit is continuity. A new Platinum Reserve is linked to the existing Membership Rewards account, so the points earned on Platinum Travel remain in the same MR pool. Closing Platinum Travel no longer forces an immediate transfer while Platinum Reserve stays active.

Wait until Platinum Reserve appears against the existing Membership Rewards account and the complete balance is visible before closing Platinum Travel. Record the MR account details and screenshot the balance as routine protection, not because the linkage itself is uncertain.

Platinum Reserve has an annual fee of its own, so this is not a fee-free escape. It works only if you already value staying with Amex. The limited-period offer can soften that cost by adding up to 19,000 MR points, while the continued flexibility may be more valuable than forcing a large balance into the wrong programme.

Prefer not to take Platinum Reserve?

If you previously closed an Amex Membership Rewards Credit Card or Gold Charge Card, call customer care and ask whether the card can be reinstated. This can offer another way to keep the existing Membership Rewards account active when the next Platinum Travel fee is approaching and Platinum Reserve does not suit your plans.

Reinstatement is not automatic. It can depend on how recently the card was closed, the account history and Amex eligibility checks. Keep Platinum Travel open until the reinstated card is active, linked to the existing MR account and showing the complete points balance.

3. Leaving Amex completely? Transfer or redeem first

The decision is simpler if you are certain that Platinum Travel and every other eligible American Express card will leave your wallet.

Choose a destination for the Membership Rewards balance while the final card and MR account are active. Marriott Bonvoy can suit a cardmember who wants hotel flexibility. An airline programme can be better when a specific award is already available. Statement-credit or catalogue redemptions may also be considered if certainty matters more than maximising travel value.

Once the final eligible Amex card is cancelled, an unredeemed Membership Rewards balance can be forfeited after 30 days. Never close that last card on the assumption that the points will wait indefinitely.

Before any closure request: complete the account sweep

Card closure can affect more than the Membership Rewards balance. Check these three account-level items before the Platinum Travel account is shut.

  • Move eligible credit limit to MRCC: If your Membership Rewards Credit Card will remain open, ask customer care to shift as much of the available Platinum Travel limit as it can approve. Make the request before closure; the final amount remains at Amex’s discretion.
  • Check pending spend-based campaigns: If you enrolled in a targeted spending campaign or completed a promotional spend requirement, contact customer care and confirm whether the bonus has qualified, when it will post, and whether Platinum Travel must remain active until that date.
  • Protect a pending Pay with Points bonus: If you recently used Pay with Points under an offer and are waiting for bonus points, a rebate or another promotional credit, ask Amex whether the card must remain open for the benefit to post. Do not close the account until the benefit is visible or Amex confirms the treatment in writing.

Save screenshots of the campaign, redemption, qualifying transactions and customer-care confirmation. A closure request is much easier to time correctly when every pending reward and credit-limit decision has already been settled.

Your positionWhat to do firstWhat not to do
Platinum Travel was renewed recentlyAsk Amex whether a pro-rata renewal-fee refund is availableAssume the original fee decision cannot be revisited
No redemption plan, but willing to remain with AmexMove to Platinum Reserve and keep the existing MR balance in the same poolTransfer a large balance randomly to avoid the renewal date
No redemption plan and Platinum Reserve is not suitableAsk whether a recently closed MRCC or Gold Charge Card can be reinstatedClose Platinum Travel before the reinstated card and MR balance are visible
Leaving American Express completelyTransfer or redeem every MR point before closing the final eligible cardCancel first and decide where the points should go later

The worst strategy combines urgency with uncertainty: paying another fee without checking the alternatives, transferring points into a programme you may not use, or closing the last Amex card before protecting a balance accumulated over years.

Current Amex India transfer partners

Etihad Guest left the Amex India transfer list on 1 July 2026, while Air India Maharaja Club and Accor Live Limitless remain unavailable as direct routes. That leaves seven practical exits. Recheck the live menu before moving points, then choose from the options below.

What 1 lakh Amex MR points become

Transfer ratios can make two programmes look equivalent when their usefulness is completely different. Here is the arithmetic before award pricing, taxes, surcharges or transfer bonuses enter the picture.

DestinationCalculationBalance received
Marriott Bonvoy1,00,000 MR × 11,00,000 Bonvoy points
Hilton Honors1,00,000 MR × 0.990,000 Hilton points
British Airways Avios1,00,000 MR ÷ 250,000 Avios
Qatar Airways Avios1,00,000 MR ÷ 250,000 Avios
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer1,00,000 MR ÷ 250,000 KrisFlyer miles
Cathay Asia Miles1,00,000 MR ÷ 250,000 Asia Miles
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club1,00,000 MR ÷ 250,000 Virgin Points

The largest number is not automatically the best redemption. Marriott’s 1:1 ratio provides optionality; an airline transfer provides precision. The right destination depends on how soon you will travel and whether you can see the award you want.

1. Marriott Bonvoy: the strongest default exit

Best for: cardmembers who want to close Platinum Travel but do not yet have fixed travel dates.

Where this programme can take you

  • India: Goa, Rajasthan, Kerala, the Himalayan foothills and major city stays, where a wide hotel choice makes smaller balances easier to use.
  • Maldives and Sri Lanka: strong candidates for aspirational resorts or a short island break, especially when cash rates climb.
  • Southeast Asia: Bali, Phuket, Koh Samui, Bangkok and Vietnam offer everything from practical city hotels to resort redemptions.
  • Middle East and Türkiye: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and Istanbul can work well for a stopover or a longer holiday.
  • Japan, Europe and Australia: useful for expensive city stays, provided the points rate is compared carefully with the cash price.

Why Marriott works

  • The 1:1 transfer preserves the full numerical balance.
  • Bonvoy has a wide geographic footprint, from practical airport hotels to aspirational resorts.
  • A five-night standard-room award costs the points required for four nights because the lowest-priced night is free.
  • Points remain active when there is qualifying activity at least once every 24 months.

Marriott is not a vault with a guaranteed exchange rate. Hotels use dynamic award pricing, programmes devalue, and an expensive property can still deliver weak value. Its advantage is flexibility: the points are easier to use across many destinations than a narrowly chosen airline currency.

Amex MR balanceBonvoy points receivedPractical interpretation
40,000 MR40,000 BonvoyA useful top-up or one to several nights, depending on property and date
80,000 MR80,000 BonvoyEnough flexibility to compare multiple properties or assemble a short stay
1,20,000 MR1,20,000 BonvoyA meaningful hotel balance; five-night pricing may improve the result

Do not transfer to Marriott merely to convert the points onward to an airline. Bonvoy airline conversions usually introduce a substantial dilution. Use this route because you want hotel flexibility, not because it appears to be an extra transfer step.

2. British Airways Avios: the most flexible airline exit

Best for: travellers who want access to oneworld awards without committing the balance to one operating airline.

Where this programme can take you

  • London: direct British Airways awards from India can be useful when the Avios price and carrier charges work together.
  • Europe through London or Madrid: Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Madrid and other European cities are worth comparing across British Airways and Iberia.
  • Doha and beyond: move Avios to Qatar Airways when a better route appears for Europe, Africa or North America.
  • Sri Lanka and the Maldives: search SriLankan Airlines for short regional journeys through Colombo.
  • Japan and Australia: Japan Airlines domestic sectors and Qantas flights within Australia can turn Avios into useful short-haul awards.

Why Avios is different

  • British Airways Avios can be combined with eligible accounts in the wider Avios family, including Qatar Airways Privilege Club.
  • Avios remain active when there is qualifying earning, spending, buying or sharing activity at least once every 36 months.
  • The currency can work well for selected short and medium-haul awards, although carrier charges must always be checked.

This makes British Airways Club a useful gateway. A traveller can begin with BA Avios, then move Avios to Qatar when a Qatar redemption becomes compelling, subject to account-linking rules.

Amex MR balanceCalculationAvios received
40,000 MR40,000 ÷ 220,000 Avios
80,000 MR80,000 ÷ 240,000 Avios
1,20,000 MR1,20,000 ÷ 260,000 Avios

Search the exact route in both Avios programmes before transferring. The same journey can carry different award pricing or surcharges depending on where it is booked.

3. Virgin Atlantic: the safest airline currency for expiry

Best for: someone who insists on an airline transfer but cannot commit to a travel date.

Where this programme can take you

  • London: Virgin Atlantic flights from India are the natural first search, particularly when a premium-cabin seat appears at a sensible cash surcharge.
  • North America: continue through London on Virgin Atlantic or search selected Delta routes for cities such as New York, Boston, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
  • Caribbean: Barbados, Antigua and other leisure destinations can be paired with a London journey when award space aligns.
  • Japan: ANA redemptions can be exceptional, but seats are scarce and should be found before transferring any points.
  • Europe: selected Air France, KLM and other partner awards can open Paris, Amsterdam and onward connections.

Virgin Points do not expire. That removes the most uncomfortable part of speculative airline parking. Flying Club also offers access to Virgin Atlantic and selected partners, which can produce excellent redemptions when the right seat appears.

The trade-off is unpredictability. Virgin uses dynamic pricing on its own flights, partner awards require careful searching, and cash surcharges can erase the charm of a low points price. No expiry is valuable; it is not the same as guaranteed value.

4. KrisFlyer: excellent for a trip, poor for parking

Best for: a confirmed Singapore Airlines or Star Alliance redemption.

Where this programme can take you

  • Singapore: ideal for a city break or a stopover before continuing deeper into Asia.
  • Southeast Asia: Bali, Phuket, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are natural one-stop journeys from India.
  • Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are among the strongest reasons to build a trip around Singapore Airlines.
  • New Zealand: Auckland and Christchurch can be reached with a Singapore connection when long-haul Saver space appears.
  • Japan and South Korea: Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Seoul pair well with a Singapore stopover.
  • Europe and North America: Singapore Airlines and Star Alliance awards can work, but the mileage requirement should be compared with closer programmes first.

KrisFlyer can unlock Singapore Airlines premium cabins, Southeast Asia and onward connections to Australia. Its monthly Spontaneous Escapes offers can discount selected Saver awards by 30%, but the routes and dates change every month.

The weakness is a hard clock. KrisFlyer miles generally expire three years after they are earned, even when the member remains active. Transfer only after confirming availability and checking whether the award can be ticketed immediately.

Illustrative India–Singapore Saver awardKrisFlyer milesAmex MR required at 2:1
Economy, one way19,000 miles19,000 × 2 = 38,000 MR
Business, one way45,000 miles45,000 × 2 = 90,000 MR
Business if the exact flight receives a 30% Spontaneous Escapes discount31,500 miles31,500 × 2 = 63,000 MR

These are planning numbers, not a promise of seats. Award pricing, routes and promotional eligibility must be checked on the date of booking.

5. Qatar Airways Avios: for a confirmed premium-cabin plan

Best for: travellers targeting Qatar Airways business class, Doha or a connection through the Middle East.

Where this programme can take you

  • Doha: build in a stopover and turn a connecting itinerary into a two-destination trip.
  • Europe: London, Paris, Zurich, Madrid, Rome and Athens are natural one-stop options from India.
  • Africa: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Zanzibar and the Seychelles are particularly attractive through Doha.
  • North America: New York, Chicago, Washington, Seattle and San Francisco become realistic premium-cabin targets when award space opens.
  • South America: São Paulo and onward connections suit travellers willing to use Avios for a longer, high-value journey.

Qatar Avios can be a superb redemption currency when Qsuite or another premium award is genuinely available. It also belongs to the wider Avios ecosystem, reducing the need to choose between BA and Qatar too early.

The order matters: search first, calculate the full Avios requirement and taxes, then transfer. A beautiful route map has no value when the award calendar is empty.

6. Cathay Asia Miles: the Asia and oneworld specialist

Best for: travellers with a specific Cathay Pacific or oneworld itinerary in Asia.

Where this programme can take you

  • Hong Kong: the obvious first choice for a standalone city break or a stopover.
  • Japan and South Korea: Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo and Seoul fit naturally behind a Hong Kong connection.
  • Taiwan and Southeast Asia: Taipei, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila and Singapore offer practical regional itineraries.
  • Australia and New Zealand: Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland can work well when Cathay premium-cabin availability appears.
  • North America: Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto are long-haul options for a larger Asia Miles balance.
  • Oneworld partners: search Japan Airlines, Qantas and other partners when Cathay’s own network does not fit the trip.

Asia Miles can be useful for Hong Kong, North Asia and selected oneworld premium cabins. Miles remain active when there is an eligible transaction at least once every 18 months.

That shorter activity window needs attention, and partner availability is not uniform. Asia Miles is a focused choice, not a general-purpose escape route.

7. Hilton Honors: only when the stay is already taking shape

Best for: a known Hilton property and date, particularly a five-night standard-room award for a member with Hilton elite status.

Where this programme can take you

  • India: city stays and short breaks in destinations such as Goa, Jaipur, Agra, Bengaluru and Chennai are the easiest place to begin searching.
  • UAE: Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah offer a broad mix of city, beach and family resorts.
  • Maldives and Seychelles: aspirational properties can justify a transfer when the award price is attractive against a high cash rate.
  • Thailand: Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui are strong leisure options with a wide range of hotel styles.
  • Bali, Malaysia and Singapore: useful for combining a resort stay with a city stop.
  • Europe and Türkiye: London, Paris and Istanbul are worth considering for a five-night redemption when elite fifth-night-free pricing applies.

The transfer ratio is 10:9, so 1 lakh Amex MR becomes 90,000 Hilton points. Hilton points also expire after 24 months without qualifying activity. Eligible Silver, Gold and Diamond members can receive the fifth night free on a qualifying five-night standard-room reward stay.

Hilton’s hotel footprint is useful, but the ratio alone does not make it a defensive home. Transfer when the redemption value is already visible.

Three transfers to avoid

KrisFlyer without a travel date

A three-year expiry clock is generous for a trip and unforgiving for a vague intention.

Hilton because 90,000 looks larger than 50,000

Different currencies have different economics. Compare the points required for the exact hotel or flight, not the size of the transferred balance.

Any airline before checking taxes and availability

An award seat can disappear, and a low mileage price can still carry high surcharges. Search, calculate and transfer in that order.

The safest closure sequence

  1. Stop new spending and allow pending transactions, refunds and milestone points to settle.
  2. Record the balance with screenshots of Membership Rewards and recent card activity.
  3. Clear all dues, including EMIs or charges that may post later.
  4. Link loyalty accounts in the same name well before cancellation.
  5. Choose one primary redemption and one backup.
  6. Transfer the points while the card and MR account are active.
  7. Wait for the destination balance and save the transfer confirmation.
  8. Request cancellation only after both the card balance and MR balance have been handled.

Final verdict

The Platinum Travel devaluation may end the card’s role in your wallet. It should not end the value already earned.

For a cardmember with no immediate booking who is willing to stay with Amex, Platinum Reserve now offers the cleanest route because the existing MR balance remains in the same account. For someone leaving Amex completely, Marriott Bonvoy offers the strongest combination of ratio, breadth and time. British Airways Avios remains the most flexible airline exit, while KrisFlyer, Qatar Avios, Asia Miles and Hilton become stronger only when the redemption is already visible.

The worst option is also the easiest: cancel first and decide later. Move slowly, verify every account, and let the points land before the card leaves.

These ratios and rules reflect the position on 10 August 2026. Loyalty programmes will change again. Recheck the live transfer menu, taxes, award availability and expiry rules before moving points.
