An interesting message landed in my inbox recently.

A community member was preparing to buy a car and wanted to charge ₹12 lakh to his Axis Atlas Credit Card.

At first glance, Atlas looked like an easy recommendation. It offers a strong base earn rate, valuable transfer partners and meaningful spend-based milestones.

Then came the detail that changed the entire calculation:

He had already spent approximately ₹8 lakh on the card during the anniversary year.

That meant the most rewarding part of the Atlas milestone journey was already behind him.

Why Existing Spending Changes the Answer

Axis Atlas awards:

Annual eligible spendingMilestone EDGE Miles
₹3 lakh2,500
₹7.5 lakhAdditional 2,500
₹15 lakhAdditional 5,000

With ₹8 lakh already spent, the cardholder had crossed the ₹3 lakh and ₹7.5 lakh milestones.

The next reward was 5,000 EDGE Miles at ₹15 lakh. He therefore needed another ₹7 lakh to reach it.

If the entire ₹12 lakh car payment went on Atlas, the card would cross ₹15 lakh after the first ₹7 lakh. The remaining ₹5 lakh would earn only the regular base rewards.

Axis Atlas: The ₹12 Lakh Calculation

Atlas earns 2 EDGE Miles for every ₹100 spent on eligible regular purchases.

ComponentCalculationReward
Base rewards₹12,00,000 ÷ ₹100 × 224,000 EDGE Miles
₹15 lakh milestoneFinal milestone crossed5,000 EDGE Miles
Total incremental reward24,000 + 5,00029,000 EDGE Miles

The transfer route can be super rewarding. At a 1:2 transfer ratio, 29,000 EDGE Miles could become as many as 58,000 airline or hotel partner points, depending on the selected programme.

Axis Atlas could be a straight win if Accor stayed for transfer however it has been removed from Transfer partner. Though Axis Atlas has transfer partners can be checked for free at Book1A.com for free.

That remains an excellent return. But it is no longer the runaway winner it initially appears to be.

The Marriott Bonvoy Alternative

The Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank Credit Card approaches high spending differently.

Its base reward rate is modest: 2 Marriott Bonvoy points for every ₹150 spent on eligible regular purchases.

Its real strength lies in Free Night Awards.

First-year milestoneBenefit
Welcome benefit1 Free Night Award
₹6 lakh eligible spend1 additional Free Night Award
₹9 lakh eligible spend1 additional Free Night Award
₹15 lakh eligible spend1 additional Free Night Award

Each Free Night Award can be redeemed for a standard room requiring up to 15,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, subject to availability.

The ₹12 lakh spend unlocks two milestone awards. The third award comes from the card’s welcome benefit.

Collectively, the three certificates can cover three separate nights priced at up to 15,000 points each. They are not equivalent to 45,000 unrestricted Marriott points, but the potential hotel value can still be substantial when used intelligently.
We have covered everything in our review and tricks to maximize the value.

The ₹15 Lakh Marriott Sweet Spot

Stopping at ₹12 lakh leaves the cardholder ₹3 lakh short of the final milestone.

Taking annual eligible spending from ₹12 lakh to ₹15 lakh adds:

Additional benefitCalculationReward
Base points on another ₹3 lakh₹3,00,000 ÷ ₹150 × 24,000 Marriott points
₹15 lakh milestoneFinal spend milestone1 Free Night Award
Total additional reward4,000 points + 1 Free Night Award

The complete first-year outcome at different spending levels looks like this:

Eligible annual spendMarriott pointsWelcome awardMilestone awardsTotal awards
₹6 lakh8,000112
₹9 lakh12,000123
₹12 lakh16,000123
₹15 lakh20,000134

The progression from ₹12 lakh to ₹15 lakh is particularly attractive because the next ₹3 lakh produces both regular points and another complete hotel night.

Axis Atlas vs Marriott Bonvoy HDFC

Card strategyIncremental reward
Put ₹12 lakh on Atlas after already spending ₹8 lakh29,000 EDGE Miles equal to approx 58,000 partner miles/hotel points
Put ₹12 lakh on a new Marriott Bonvoy HDFC card16,000 Marriott points + 3 Free Night Awards which is min equal to approx 61,000 marriot points
Take Marriott spending to ₹15 lakh20,000 Marriott points + 4 Free Night Awards

Atlas offers greater flexibility and more transfer partners. It's miles can be transferred across several airline and hotel loyalty programmes, making it easier to build rewards around a specific trip. However you can only transfer only 30,000 edge miles in a year. You have to wait till 2027 if you had breach that limit.

Marriott Bonvoy HDFC is more concentrated. Its value depends on whether the cardholder plan his stays at Marriott properties and can use the certificates before expiry. Available to burn in 2026. Helps in experiencing astonishing Marriott properties. Though it can earn points on those categories which are excluded in Axis Atlas.

For the right traveller, however, three well-redeemed hotel nights can be more valuable than a large but less immediately useful mileage balance. I will suggest to swipe Marriott Card for this purchase and use Axis Atlas for other spends.

Do Not Ignore the Dealership Charge

The rewards calculation is incomplete until the dealer’s card-processing charge is included.

Dealer chargeAdditional cost on ₹12 lakh
1%₹12,000
1.5%₹18,000
2%₹24,000
2.5%₹30,000

A 2% charge adds ₹24,000 to the purchase. That can consume most of the conservative value of the rewards. Negotiate hard with the dealer.

The dealer’s payment terminal must also classify the transaction as an eligible purchase for base points. Confirm the processing charge and transaction classification before making a large payment. The transaction should not be converted into EMI if the rewards programme excludes EMI purchases.

Where the Marriott Card Shines

The Marriott Bonvoy HDFC card is not necessarily the best card for everyday spending. Its base reward rate alone will rarely excite a serious rewards enthusiast.

Its strength appears when a large eligible expense pushes the card through several Free Night Award milestones in quick succession.

That makes it worth considering for major purchases and planned expenses where card payments are accepted, the merchant category is eligible and the processing charge does not destroy the return.

The card also provides 12 complimentary lounge visits within India and 12 visits outside India annually, alongside Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status and 10 Elite Night Credits.

These benefits do not replace the milestone value, but they make the card easier to justify beyond a single large transaction.

The Smarter Decision

Axis Atlas was not a poor choice in this case. An incremental earning of 29,000 EDGE Miles remains valuable.

But the cardholder’s existing ₹8 lakh spend changed its marginal return. Only ₹7 lakh was required to unlock the final Atlas milestone, while the rest would earn at the base rate.

A new Marriott Bonvoy HDFC card offered a different proposition: 16,000 Marriott points and three first-year Free Night Awards on ₹12 lakh of eligible spending.

The correct answer ultimately depends on three things:

The dealer’s processing charge.

The transaction’s eligibility for rewards and milestones.

The cardholder’s ability to redeem Marriott certificates or transfer EDGE Miles intelligently.

This is the larger lesson behind the comparison:

Rewards optimisation is not about finding the best credit card. It is about finding the best card for your next rupee of spend.
My pick will be HDFC Marriot for this purchase specially how powerful it is for excluded category. One of favorite milestone cards after Axis Vistara Infinite and IDFC Vistara cards.
