Kiwi looks simple: scan, pay and earn cashback. The reality depends on your issuing bank, the size of each payment and whether Neon’s milestones work in your favour.

Last verified: 9 August 2026

Most RuPay credit cards treat UPI as one more payment option. Kiwi builds the entire card around it. The neighbourhood QR code is the main event, not an afterthought.

The free plan pays 1.5% on eligible Scan & Pay transactions. Neon raises the base rate to 2% and promises 5% after ₹1.5 lakh of eligible annual spend. That sounds almost too easy.

It is not. Kiwi may give you YES Bank Klick, AU Kosmo or PNB Kiwi. The rewards look similar; the cards do not. Klick is virtual and lifetime free. Kosmo is lifetime free with plastic. PNB charges an annual fee unless you earn the waiver.

Then comes the rule that decides the real return. Kiwi calculates rewards in blocks of ₹100 within each payment.

A ₹99 chai earns nothing. A ₹199 grocery bill earns only ₹1.50. The 1.5% promise survives only when the transaction amount cooperates.

Quick verdict: Kiwi is superb for the right UPI spender and fairly ordinary for everyone else. Stay free below ₹1 lakh. Neon starts making sense at ₹1 lakh and peaks at ₹1.5 lakh. Your bank, credit limit and payment sizes decide how close you get to those numbers.

Kiwi lists the 1.5% Scan & Pay rate, 0.5% online rate and its current banking partners on Kiwi’s official website. The more important rules are in Kiwi’s rewards policy.

One Rewards Programme, Two Sets of Rules

Kiwi controls the cashback. The issuing bank controls almost everything that can cost you money. Keep those two rulebooks separate.

The PNB Kiwi page lists a ₹500 physical-card joining fee, ₹750 annual fee and ₹1.5 lakh waiver. The AU Kosmo page shows lifetime-free pricing with a physical card. YES Bank’s Klick guide describes a lifetime-free, virtual-only card.

The PNB Version Changes the Economics

PNB’s ₹750 renewal fee becomes ₹885 after 18% GST. If you also buy Kiwi Neon, the combined annual cost can reach ₹2,063.82.

PNB annual costAmount
PNB renewal fee₹750
GST on renewal fee₹135
Kiwi Neon fee₹999
GST on Neon₹179.82
Total₹2,063.82

There is a neat overlap at ₹1.5 lakh: that is PNB’s waiver target and Neon’s top milestone. The two counters can still disagree. PNB keeps the fee-waiver score; Kiwi keeps its own score after removing excluded categories and refunds.

How Credit Card on UPI Works

  1. Apply through the Kiwi app.
  2. Complete the issuing bank’s identity and credit checks.
  3. Activate and link the approved RuPay card.
  4. Set the UPI PIN.
  5. Scan an eligible merchant QR code in Kiwi.
  6. Select the credit card as the payment source.
  7. Authorise the transaction using the UPI PIN.
  8. Pay the issuing bank’s credit-card bill by the due date.

The important word is merchant. You can pay a shop, restaurant or other eligible business. You cannot use the credit line to send money to a friend, move funds to yourself or pull cash out through UPI.

Skip Neon and the reward chart is short:

Six Kiwis are worth ₹1.50. On a clean ₹100 payment, you get the full 1.5%.

But scan inside Kiwi. The RuPay card may work in another UPI app, while Kiwi-funded cashback usually will not follow it there.

The ₹100 Block Rule Is the Real Devaluation

Since June 2025, Kiwi has rounded every payment down to the nearest ₹100 for rewards. The leftover amount disappears. It does not join the next transaction.

A Month of Realistic Small Payments

This is why a person paying ₹100 and ₹200 bills can earn the full rate while someone making endless ₹149 payments cannot. Same card, very different return.

Kiwi Neon Is a Milestone Programme, Not a Flat 5% Card

Neon is the paid lane. It costs ₹999 plus tax for a year and is offered only to eligible Kiwi cardholders.

Neon costAmount
Membership fee₹999
GST at 18%₹179.82
Total annual cost₹1,178.82

Neon changes the Scan & Pay base rate from 1.5% to 2%. Online UPI remains at 0.5%.

Eligible spend since enrolmentTotal cashback at milestoneLounge benefit
₹50,0003%1 pass
₹1,00,0004%1 additional pass
₹1,50,0005%1 additional pass

The fee, validity and milestone formula are in Kiwi’s official Neon terms.

The Milestone Percentages Include Rewards Already Received

This is where the marketing can trip people up. The 3%, 4% and 5% figures include everything already earned; they do not stack on top of the 2% base.

At ₹1 lakh eligible spending, 4% equals ₹4,000. If ₹2,000 has already been awarded as the Neon base reward, the milestone adjustment is ₹2,000. The final reward is ₹4,000, not ₹6,000.

And the clock starts when you join Neon, not when you received the card. Refunds and excluded payments come off the running total.

The Neon Return Curve Is Full of Cliffs

Here is the cleanest version of the maths: every payment qualifies, every amount ends in 00 and the monthly cap never bites. Lounge passes get zero value. If you use them, consider that a bonus.

Eligible annual spendGross Neon cashbackNet after ₹1,178.82 feeNet return
₹25,000₹500–₹678.82–2.72%
₹49,900₹998–₹180.82–0.36%
₹50,000₹1,500₹321.180.64%
₹75,000₹2,000₹821.181.09%
₹99,900₹2,498₹1,319.181.32%
₹1,00,000₹4,000₹2,821.182.82%
₹1,25,000₹4,500₹3,321.182.66%
₹1,49,900₹4,998₹3,819.182.55%
₹1,50,000₹7,500₹6,321.184.21%
₹2,00,000₹8,500₹7,321.183.66%
₹3,00,000₹10,500₹9,321.183.11%

The cliff at the top is dramatic. At ₹1,49,900, you sit near ₹4,998. The next ₹100 completes the milestone and lifts the total to ₹7,500. That jump is a catch-up adjustment across the year, not absurd cashback on one payment.

₹1.5 lakh is the sweet spot. Beyond it, new spending goes back to the 2% base rate and slowly dilutes the return.

Neon Versus Staying Free

Eligible spendFree planNeon after feeNeon advantage or disadvantage
₹25,000₹375–₹678.82–₹1,053.82

₹2,00,000₹3,000₹7,321.18+₹4,321.18

The answer changes in one payment. Finish at ₹99,900 and Neon still loses to the free plan. Reach ₹1 lakh and it jumps ahead by more than ₹1,300.

Practical Neon rule: Do not pay for Neon merely because you expect to cross ₹50,000. Subscribe when ₹1 lakh of eligible spending is comfortably achievable. Aim for ₹1.5 lakh if you want the programme’s strongest return.

The Monthly Reward Cap Depends on Your Credit Limit

A low credit limit can spoil the party. Kiwi caps regular monthly cashback at 1% of your limit. Neon’s milestone catch-up is separate.

Credit limitMonthly regular-reward capSpend to cap at 1.5%Spend to cap at 2%
₹20,000₹200₹13,334₹10,000

₹75,000₹750₹50,000₹37,500

₹2,00,000₹2,000₹1,33,334₹1,00,000

Paying the card early does not open a second reward bucket. With a ₹50,000 limit, Kiwi rewards only up to ₹50,000 of monthly spend, even if you repay midway and spend ₹70,000 in total.

The Zero-Reward Minefield

Kiwi is generous at the neighbourhood kirana and far less generous elsewhere. Its exclusion list is long, and the MCC decides the result. The name on the shopfront does not.

Horticulture and veterinaryVeterinary, landscaping and horticultural merchants

A zero-reward payment is doubly painful on Neon: no Kiwis now and no progress toward the milestone. If the coding looks wrong, keep the invoice and statement before raising a ticket.

EMI on UPI: Eligible, With an Exception

Kiwi even rewards some EMI-on-UPI payments. It stops when another EMI offer is already paying you back, such as no-cost EMI, interest-back or processing-fee cashback.

Read “no-cost” carefully. The bank may still charge interest and Kiwi may refund an equivalent amount. Processing fees and GST can survive the offer.

Fees That Can Erase the Cashback

ChargeWhy it matters
Revolving interestCan exceed 45% annually on applicable variants
Cash advanceFee applies immediately and usually has no interest-free period
Late paymentApplies when the required payment is missed
Payment returnCan apply when autopay, NACH or cheque payment fails
Foreign-currency markupFar higher than Kiwi’s normal cashback
DCCCan apply when an overseas transaction is billed in INR
EMI chargesProcessing fees and GST may remain payable
PNB physical and renewal feesApply according to the selected variant and waiver status

This card works only when the bill is paid in full. One month of revolving interest can wipe out a long run of ₹1.50 rewards.

The Best Way to Use Kiwi

  • Use Kiwi for genuine merchant Scan & Pay spending.
  • Prefer eligible payments of ₹100 or more.
  • Track Kiwi eligible spending separately from the card statement.
  • Maintain a buffer above Neon milestones for refunds.
  • Redeem after crossing 500 Kiwis rather than accumulating an unnecessarily large balance.
  • Use full-bill autopay where practical.
  • Treat merchant offers as temporary bonuses.
  • Avoid cash withdrawals and overseas spending on these cards.
  • Verify the assigned issuer before accepting the card.

Do not stop at ₹1,50,000 and declare victory. One late refund can knock you back. If normal spending allows it, finish around ₹1.52–₹1.55 lakh and leave the milestone some breathing room.

Who Will Love the Kiwi Credit Card?

Kiwi belongs in your UPI rotation if you:

  • Regularly pay merchants through UPI QR codes.
  • Spend primarily on eligible grocery, dining and general retail merchants.
  • Want cash-like value rather than airline miles.
  • Pay every credit-card bill in full.
  • Can complete ₹1 lakh or ₹1.5 lakh of eligible spending after taking Neon.
  • Have enough credit limit to avoid the monthly cap.
  • Receive the lifetime-free YES Bank or AU version.

Skip it if most of your payments are below ₹100 or go toward utilities, fuel, education, rent, insurance and government services. It is also the wrong card for international spending or premium travel benefits.

The Book1A Verdict

Kiwi gets the big idea right. This is not an ordinary credit card with a UPI checkbox; it is a UPI rewards product first.

The rough edges are real. ₹100 rounding punishes small bills. Several large household categories earn nothing. A low credit limit squeezes the monthly reward, and getting PNB instead of YES or AU adds a fee question before you even begin.

Neon demands conviction. At ₹50,000 it still loses to staying free. At ₹1 lakh it finally earns its keep. At ₹1.5 lakh, the numbers become excellent: ₹7,500 gross, ₹6,321.18 after the fee, and three lounge passes still sitting on top.

If you receive Klick or Kosmo, pay in full and can reach ₹1.5 lakh without forcing spend, Kiwi is difficult to beat for everyday QR payments.
